Tour Description
This is by far THE best tour for wildlife viewing in Panama! We combine it with a visit to a village for a taste of Panama's culture. Basically a 2 for 1 special deal for an amazing day tour!
Leaving Panama City behind we pass the Pedro Miguel Locks, parallel the Panama Canal’s famous Culebra Cut and pass through a section of the Camino de Cruces National Park before we head into Soberania National Park. Known for its birding (the Audubon Society’s annual bird count has spotted over 500 species in 24 hours!), Soberania is full of wildlife and is a wonderful place to watch for monkeys, sloths, the Harpy Eagle and more! It is also where we find the Gamboa Public Dock which is located on the once flowing Chagres River (dammed during the creation of the Panama Canal) A small boat takes us into the main channel of the Panama Canal where we can get closeups of those giant ships! The 2 hour eco tour also gives us time to explore Lake Gatun’s hidden bays and 'monkey island' in search of wildlife.
After the eco tour portion of our journey we will head up the infamous Chagres River where we will visit an authentic Indian village; learn about the community, their history, art, music and dance. We can take a short walk/hike along the trails through the rainforest to learn more about the native plants and how they are used. You dont HAVE to do the walk. Relax in the village checking out their crafts and interacting with the people. As you can imagine, sometimes in a 'rainforest' it RAINS and trails can get slippery..
On the way back towards the city, we'll stop for lunch before dropping you at your hotel. *Lunch is not included. If you haven't been to Miraflores Locks, we can drop you off at the visitor center.
* If it rains you get wet! The boat is covered but you should prepare for rain or shine. Bring water/snacks and wear shoes that can handle a little dirt/mud.
