Tour Description
The tour starts from your hotel and we will drive to Colon. Our first stop is the Panama Canal Expansion Visitor Center at Aguaclara Locks. See the new, bigger, set of locks recently completed in 2016 and the giant ships that they hold! There is also a nice short video and amazing views of Lake Gatun and on out to the Caribbean. This experience alone makes the tour worthwhile! *Added Bonus, they plan to open a viewing platform at the old Gatun Locks site by May 2025.
We then cross the newest bridge over the canal, known as the Atlantic Bridge, and head into the Chagres National Park to visit the UNESCO world heritage site of Fort San Lorenzo, first built during the late 16th century, which stands guard at the mouth of the Chagres river. Monkeys, sloths, and anteaters are often seen, as are several species of birds, lizards, and butterflies. Learn about the legacy of pirates, shipwrecks and Spanish Gold!
Before we head back to Panama City, we stop for lunch on the water at the historic US Fort Sherman which is now a nice little marina (lunch not included). Enjoy the food, scenery and embrace the experience that has been such an important part of Panama's history since the very beginning.
